“To receive this recognition of the incredible role mothers play in our world on this day is something I can never forget.
She told Newstalk reporter Henry McKean that her win on her first mother’s day as a mother “feels like some kind of crazy alchemy.”
“It feels like some kind of crazy alchemy that all of these tongs are colliding on a day like today.
“My daughter got her first tooth this week. What a gift to explore motherhood through this incredible mother that Agnes was and to become one myself.
Speaking a few moments after her win she said: "Wow. Thank you so much. This is really something."
After saluting her fellow nominees and members of the academy she thanked the women who she worked with.

She continued: “My family, my Irish family, they're all here. Ireland bought them flights.
“Mum, Dad, thank you for teaching us to dream and to never be defined by expectation but to carve from your own passion.
“To understand the complexity of a mother’s love is the greatest collision of my life. I would like to dedicate this ward to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”
She concluded her acceptance speech by dedicating the Oscar to her husband and eight-month-old daughter Isla.
“We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds. Thank you for reocgnising me in this role. Go raibh míle, míle maith agat.”
