Islamic State has claimed responsibility for twin bombings that hit the Iraqi capital this morning.

The twin bombing at an outdoor market in a Shiite-dominated neighbourhood of Baghdad has left at least 28 people dead.

In an online statement, the Islamic State group says the attack was carried out by an Iraqi and targeted members of Shiite militias.

The attack is the deadliest of three assaults in the city today, in which a total of at least 50 people have died and 65 have been injured.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the other bombings.

BBC reports that the bombings come amid a political crisis in the country.

Iraq's prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, has said the parliamentary deadlock is hampering the fight against Islamic State.

IS has retained control of large parts of Iraq, particularly in the north of the country.
