Irish Water has issued a warning about an online scam targeting both customers and non-customers of the utility.

Fraudulent emails are being sent with the aim of accessing recipients’ payment information.

The phishing scam asks recipients to click a link that will take them to a ‘My Water’ account, wherein they will be asked to complete annual account maintenance. The website is not an Irish Water website.

Irish Water say the emails come from at least two addresses - noreply.notification.water.ie@ospcs.com, mailer@elasticemail.com – and possibly others, and have reminded customers that they will never request their payment details online.

They have asked that anyone who does receive one of these emails contact them immediately – and does not click any links contained within or provide any financial information.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon the company has said there was no breach of their security systems and customer details “have not been compromised.”

In their statement on the matter Irish Water have outlined the steps you must take if you suspect you have been caught out by a phishing scam.

  • Change the information you've revealed e.g. Change any passwords or PINs on the account or service that you think might have been compromised
  • Contact your bank or the service provider directly
  • Routinely review your bank and credit card statements for unexplained charges or enquiries that you didn't initiate
  • Contact the authorities. The Garda Bureau of Fraud investigation is Ireland's national fraud and internet crime reporting centre.
