It will come as little surprise to most, but Facebook is rather popular among Dubliners, with 75% of the county's population having an account on the social network. What might be surprising, however, are the huge geographical gaps between the amount of Facebook users around the rest of the county, despite the company enjoying an Irish userbase well in excess of 2 million.

As soon as you leave Dublin, the numbers drop significantly. Limerick has the second highest rate of Facebook users, but the percentage of the population in the county with an account is only 50%. Indeed, Dublin and Limerick are the only two counties with half or more of residents using the social network. The rates are notably lower in the other heavily populated counties such as Galway (44.68%) and Cork (42.39%).

Facebook is least popular in Roscommon and Leitrim, which only have 19.04% and 18.84% rates of 'population on Facebook'. 14 counties in the Republic have only a third or less of their populations on Facebook.

The insights come courtesy of the Discovery Team at eightytwenty, in a follow-up to their Irish Twitter survey, which showed similar variations around the country. The group has put together an infographic of their latest findings, which you can see below.
