With Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness out of the Presidential race, voters have been left wondering who the party will choose to replace her as their candidate for the Áras.
Ms McGuinness said in a statement that she is prioritising her health at the moment.
“Given that the election is in a short couple of months, I do not believe that I have the strength to give the campaign my all,” she said.
“I am taking this decision on medical advice and while it is extremely difficult, it is the right decision for me and my family.”
MEP Sean Kelly was believed to have been interested in running when nominations opened last month, but he withdrew without being nominated.
“I didn’t give any interviews on this in the last couple of days because my complete sympathy is with Mairead McGuinness,” he told The Anton Savage Show.
“We worked together in the European Parliament for a good number of years.
“She was all set, I think to put in a tremendous campaign and hopefully be elected as president.”

However, Mr Kelly said he will have to “reconsider” running a campaign since “the goalposts have changed”.
“I don’t think it has even reached the stage where they are contemplating who to run,” he said.
“National executives... I think they’re all, in fairness, showing respect for Mairead.
“The discussion hasn’t started really because it’s unfair on Mairead, having had such a tramua all of a sudden and having to withdraw.
“I think next week will be time enough to reflect properly on that and take action, there’s no rush.”
When it comes to his potential chances in the race for the presidency, Mr Kelly said “I think if you enter any race, you’re entering to win it.”
Heather Humphreys has also been discussed as the Fine Gael’s next potential candidate.
