Irish garden designer Diarmuid Gavin, who was a close friend of Hugh's, spoke to The Pat Kenny Show, to express his shock and sadness on his passing.

"I can't believe it. I can't really quite take it in.

"I was with him for dinner on Friday night, and he was in sparkling form," he told the show.

Gavin said that Hugh and his husband Martin were preparing to move into their new home at the time.

Describing his nature, he described Wallace as full of life, with an element of mischief.

"He was quite magnificent, and himself and Martin were amazing."

"He had seen a lot in life, he had challenges growing up, but he wore all of that so lightly."

Statement from RTÉ

"Hugh not only opened his door to the most extraordinary homes in Ireland but he also inspired viewers to engage with the vast possibilities of innovative design.

"Our thoughts are with his husband Martin, his family, his colleagues, and as many close associates for whom Hugh was a beloved colleague and inspiring mind and the warmest of friends."
