Chinese tech firm Huawei is suing the US  government for restricting its business in the country.

A recent law bans US federal agencies and their contractors from using its equipment and services, over fears the company's technology could be used by the Chinese government for spying.

Several other countries and companies have also stopped using Huawei's products, despite the Chinese firm denying the claims.

At a press conference in Shenzhen in China yesterday, Huawei said it's seeking a judgement that the US restrictions are unconstitutional.

It also wants a permanent injunction against the ban on its products.

Guo Ping, Huawei's rotating chairman, said: "The US Congress has repeatedly failed to produce any evidence to support its restrictions on Huawei products.

"We are compelled to take this legal action as a proper and last resort.

"This ban not only is unlawful, but also restricts Huawei from engaging in fair competition, ultimately harming US consumers."

Huawei also insisted that it is "not owned, controlled, or influenced by the Chinese government".

According to the company, the restrictions mean it's also prevented from providing more advanced 5G technologies to US consumers.

It claims the ban will "impede the network upgrade progress" in the US and also stifle competition.

US ban

Explaining the US stance last month, US Vice President Mike Pence said: "The United States has also been very clear with our security partners on the threat posed by Huawei and other Chinese telecom companies.

"Chinese law requires them to provide Beijing’s vast security apparatus with access to any data that touches their network or equipment."

He also said the US is calling on other countries to "reject any enterprise that would compromise the integrity of our communications technology".

Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, was arrested late last year at Vancouver Airport on foot of an extradition request from the US.

She faces a fraud case in the US over alleged breaches of US sanctions on Iran.

Canada last week announced it will allow the extradition process against Ms Meng to proceed, with a final decision to be made in court.
