Labour's Brendan Howlin to resign as party leader

Brendan Howlin is to resign as the Labour party leader.

It comes after the party lost a seat in the general election, meaning they'll return to the Dáil with only six seats.

A leadership contest will now follow.

Mr Howlin today said Labour will not formally enter government - but is open to supporting a programme for government on certain issues from the opposition benches.

Parties say left-leaning government difficult but not impossible

The Social Democrats are warning that a left-wing government may not be possible without a confidence and supply arrangement.

The parliamentary party’s new six-member team held its first meeting in Leinster House this morning, ahead of a meeting with Sinn Féin tomorrow.

Speaking after the meeting, co-leader Roisin Shortall said they will open talks with other parties in the coming days – but won’t enter Government with anyone who does not share their vision.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald met with the Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd Barrett this afternoon as she bids to build a new left-leaning Government.

Man charged with murder of journalist Lyra McKee

A 52-year-old man has been charged with the murder of journalist Lyra McKee.

29-year-old Ms McKee was shot dead during rioting in the Creggan area of Derry on April 18th 2019.

The man has also been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and professing to be a member of a proscribed organisation.

Bohs launch new jersey as part of Amnesty campaign to end Direct Provision

Dublin’s Bohemian Football Club have joined with Amnesty International for their new away jersey.

The shirt features an image of a family fleeing war formed with the words, ‘refugees welcome.’ The words “Love Football, Hate Racism” are printed on the collar.

The club has partnered with Amnesty for a campaign to bring an end to the Direct Provision system in Ireland – ahead of the 20th anniversary of its establishment.

Essex truck deaths: Irishman given permission to appeal extradition to UK

An Irishman has been given permission by the High Court to appeal his extradition to the UK where he is wanted on multiple manslaughter charges.

Eamon Harrison from Mayobridge, County Down is wanted in relation to the deaths of 39 people found in the back of a lorry in Essex last year.

Police in the UK suspect Mr Harrison to be the man who delivered the trailer the bodies were found in to a port in Belgium, from where it was transported to England.
