Met Éireann has told people to “hang onto the raincoat” but predicted that the weather in July will see some improvement on the dismal month of June.

The temperature is predicted to creep up to 22 or 23° Celsius this weekend but showers across Ireland are still expected:

“It is going to improve for the weekend; not as dismal as it has been, so kind of mild and showers - so certainly hang onto the raincoat - but not too bad,” Evelyn Cusack, Head of Forecasting with Met Éireann, told Newstalk Breakfast.

“But there is an improvement on the way… We are going to get up into the very low 20s; we’ll say 20 - just about.

“But there will be some warm sunshine because it is high summer so once the sun comes out it is warm.

“So for the next two weeks, not bad at all, not perfect but quite good.”

People heading off on their holidays to northern France and Britain can expect similar weather but for any travellers heading further south, to places like Spain, Italy or Portugal, there will be “normal weather, not the terrible heatwaves that we’ve had.”

‘Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’

Ms Cusack also warned that even if the weather does look gloomy outside, it is still important to be careful not to get burnt:

“Can I just say, just for people to watch out with sunburn,” she added.

“I know it sounds crazy with the weather we’re having but once the sun comes out around midday to two, it is quite dangerous.

“But particularly people going out [abroad] - the Canaries is terrible. Just keep in in the early afternoon.

“The index down in the Canaries and the south of Spain is 10, 11. It’s around seven or eight in Ireland, so it really is serious down there.

“You know that expression, ‘Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’? Bring the kids into the shade and let’s hope we do get some sunshine here!”
