A Garda Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) officer has resigned in the wake of allegations he attended a party with Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch the day he was cleared of murder charges.

Gerry Hutch was found not guilty of the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in 2016 at the Special Criminal Court on Monday.

An Irish Times report claims that the Gsoc investigator told a number of people that he had been at a party at a house on Monday evening - and Mr Hutch was at the same gathering.

The claim was subsequently reported to senior management at Gsoc and the officer resigned.

Mr Byrne, 34, was killed during a crowded boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in one of the early attacks of the Hutch-Kinahan gangland feud. Issue date: Monday December 12, 2022.

According to the investigation, Garda sources said they believed the main social gathering to celebrate Mr Hutch’s acquittal had taken place on Monday night in a house in suburban Dublin outside the inner city.

A spokesperson for the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) said that an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Justice said they were aware of the incident involving an issue with a Gsoc member but added it would not be appropriate to comment on individual cases.

It is understood that the officer has been involved in a number of high profile investigations into potential garda misconduct.

Before the Gerry Hutch verdict was read out yesterday, two other men were found guilty of facilitating the murder of David Byrne through the provision of getaway vehicles.

Paul Murphy, of Cherry Avenue in Swords and Jason Bonney, of Drumnigh Wood in Portmarnock, were found guilty of assisting with the getaway and were remanded in custody ahead of their sentence hearing in May.
