The 2024 Golden Globe Awards takes place tonight in Los Angeles, and a green wave in the actors’ category means an Irish victory is likely.

The annual award show airs tonight at 1am Irish time, with a playback of the show tomorrow evening on RTÉ One.

Ireland is likely to see one victory at the LA award show, with Andrew Scott, Barry Keoghan, and Cillian Murphy nominated for Best Actor in a Drama, making up half of all nominations.

Presenter and Spotlight Producer Lisa Cannon said an “Irish wave” has emerged in one of the Globes’ most prestigious categories.

“They’re up against Leo DiCaprio and Bradley Cooper [and Colman Domingo],” she told The Pat Kenny Show.

“Let’s look at the odds – one of them is going to win.”

Dublin-born actor Barry Keoghan has been nominated for his role as Oliver Quick in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, his second nomination in as many years.

Ms Cannon said Mr Keoghan put his all into this “erotic gothic thriller”.

“He is just a tour-de-force,” she said.

“There's a scene of course that’s been very prominent where Barry in the final scene dances to murder on the dance floor completely naked.

“Barry has out and said it is ‘all him’.”

According to Ms Cannon, Mr Keoghan’s dedication to method acting has made him a strong contender for the Golden Globe.

First Golden Globe nominations

Andrew Scott has also been nominated for the first time for his leading role in All of Us Strangers, a romantic fantasy.

“You expect this twinkly melodrama but it’s beautifully crafted and nothing what you’d expect,” Ms Cannon said.

She noted this film is likely Mr Scott’s crowning glory in an extensive filmography.

“He has spoken in Variety, in Rolling Stone, about how this is really his pièce de résistance, his legacy work,” she said.

Cillian Murphy

Of the three Irish Golden Globe nominations, Cillian Murphy has received the most buzz, with Irish bookies putting him at 10/11 odds.

Ms Cannon said is yet another “tour-de-force" of Irish acting.

“Cillian Murphy’s time has finally come,” she said.

“Cillian has critical acclaim for many films across the years, including IFTAs, but has never been nominated for a Golden Globe.

“Deserving or not, Cillian has shown his stripes as an actor.”

She added she doesn’t mind which actor wins tonight as long as he’s Irish.
