A nine-year-old cyclist has died after a collision with a car in Co Galway.

A seven-year-old boy who was also cycling at the time is in a serious condition in hospital.

The incident happened on Sunday morning at around 11:55am on the R358 Ballinasloe to Ahascragh Road.

Both children were taken to Portiuncula Hospital, where the girl was later pronounced dead.

The boy remains in a serious condition.

Gardaí are at the scene and the road has been closed for a forensic examination.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station on 0909-631-890.
