A Garda has returned their medal after using the Luas to cheat in the Dublin Marathon.

Marathon organisers have stripped the runner of their race result and banned them from all further events.

Meanwhile, Gardaí have confirmed they are aware of the incident and are carrying out a fact-finding review.

“I can confirm that an investigation has taken place into this matter by the Dublin Marathon,” a spokesperson for Dublin Marathon told Newstalk

“The individual has apologised and returned their finishing medal and T-shirt.

“As per the rules and regulations of the Dublin Marathon, this person will have their result removed from the records and will be disqualified from future Dublin Marathon or Dublin Race Series events.

“The Dublin Marathon will not be providing details of the individual involved in the investigation.

The Irish Independent reports that the individual’s time was in the top 6% of participants but that it has since been expunged from this year’s records.

“An Garda Síochána is aware of a matter at the recent Dublin City Marathon involving an off-duty Garda,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“An Garda Síochána is currently conducting an internal fact finding review of the matter.”
