Off the back of what looks like a very successful Election for Fianna Fail, their financial spokesperson, Michael McGrath spoke to Jonathan Healy.

Polling above the party leader Micheal Martin in the early tallies, Mr McGrath put the success of the campaign down to Martin's leadership.

He told Jonathan: "We have had a very good campaign but we have also had five years of solid work where we focused on renewing our own organisation, reconnecting with communities right throughout the country, we have listened to people and I think we have learned from the mistakes of the past.

He continued: "Michael Martin took on a huge task in 2011 and he has done an outstanding job and certainly his performances in the various leaders' debates was a decisive factor and undoubtedly brought a lot of undecided voters in the direction of Fianna Fail.

"It looks like we'll make significant gains and it will be a good deal overall for the party."

However, on the issue of a coalition with Fine Gael he said: "We contested this election with a clear commitment that we would not go into power with Fine Gael and equally, that we would not go into power with Sinn Fein."
