Police have said it will be “extremely difficult” to find the person who seemingly wore a Hamas costume for Halloween in Derry.

In a statement to Newstalk, Derry City & Strabane Chief Superintendent Nigel Goddard confirmed they are aware of the picture circulating online and said it could constitute an offence under Section 13 of The Terrorism Act.

Chief Superintendent Goddard also said the PSNI understand “the offence” the costume could cause to people.

"From the image that we have right now, [it] will clearly be extremely difficult to identify the person pictured,” he said.

“Therefore, we would ask anyone who saw this person, can assist in identifying this person, or who may have captured this person on their mobile phone to call us on 101.

“We would also ask the person themselves to contact us to clear this matter up."

Former Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster retweeted a picture of the costume and said, "Glorifying and normalising terrorism has consequences - none of them good."

Hamas is a proscribed organisation under the United Kingdom’s Terrorism Act 2000; the Act means it is illegal to “wear clothing, carry or display articles in public in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that an individual is a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation.”
