Hollywood star Brad Pitt has angered a number of farmers in Northern Ireland after a series of loud explosions created for a new film he is producing allegedly disturbed local livestock.

The actor's production company Plan B is currently filming scenes for the forthcoming The Lost City of Z around Ballygally, Co Antrim, where production has been in operation for a number of months. But local residents are growing concerned with the ferocity of the shoot’s pyrotechnics, and have shared images of explosions and smoke spreading across the area.

Speaking to the Larne Times, farmer Jason McKillion claimed that his animals had been left “terrified” by the noise coming from the set.

"It started last Monday with bangs, gunfire and small explosions. Then on Tuesday the bigger explosions started," he said.

"The explosions shook the house and windows and the boom echoed through the glen. My neighbour’s horses were in the field near the film set and they went spare, trying to jump the ditches."

McKillion said that cows and chickens in and around Ballygally had also been disturbed by the noise coming from the filming.

McKillion also said that while the local Ballygally community welcomes the Hollywood production on location in the Antrim town, residents and farmers would have preferred the production was more forthcoming about potential disturbances and noise.

"There wasn’t a single notification about this, which would have been common courtesy," he said.

"I support companies filming here, but they need to keep local people in the loop. If we had a schedule, we could put the animals into barns. At the minute we are on tenterhooks."

A spokesperson for the film’s producers told the Telegraph that the “team made every effort to contact land owners beforehand,” and that all “work involving explosives was undertaken in line with relevant legislation.”

The Lost City of Z is being made by Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company, and will star Sienna Miller, Charlie Hunnam, and Robert Pattinson. The film tells the story of a British adventurer who heads off into the Amazon jungle in search of the remains of a lost society.

The film is set for release in 2016.
