18-year-old charged with murder of Jack Power in County Waterford

An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of 25-year-old Jack Power in Dunmore East in Waterford last summer.

Dean Kerrie, with an address in Portarlington, Co Laois, appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court this evening.

Mr Power, a fisherman from Brownstown in Dunmore East, was found with a stab wound at Shanakiel, in Dunmore East in the early hours of the July 26th last year.

He was brought to University Hospital Waterford where he died a short time later.

Skull and bones found at Bray recycling plant

Gardaí are investigating after a skull and bones were found at a recycling plant in County Wicklow.

The discovery was made at a facility in Bray today.

The remains are set to be examined by a forensic anthropologist to determine their origin.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Bray Co Wicklow were called to a recycling plant in Bray today where a skull and bones were discovered.

“The items will now be examined. Investigations are continuing.”

Woman awarded €8.4m at High Court faced “very difficult battle”

The family of a young Waterford woman who has had an €8.4m settlement in her case against the HSE approved by the High Court have said they faced a "very difficult battle" to resolve her case.

18-year-old Ciara Ormond has lived with a range of medical issues, including Cerebral Palsy, scoliosis, double incontinence, and involuntary muscle spasms in her arms and legs, since she was born at Waterford Regional Hospital in November 2000.

Her family took the case against the HSE claiming she suffered serious injuries at birth.

In approving the settlement today, Ms Justice Bronagh O'Hanlon said Ciara had suffered dreadfully and the consequences were nothing short of catastrophic.

Gardaí aiming to charge man with murder of Denis Donaldson

A warrant has been issued for a man to be charged in connection with the murder of Denis Donaldson in County Donegal.

The 55-year-old was shot dead at a cottage on the outskirts of Glenties in April 2006.

He was a senior official within Sinn Féin before he was exposed as a long-time MI5 agent.

This afternoon, Gardaí told an inquest into his death that the Special Criminal Court has now issued a warrant for an individual to be brought before it to be charged with his murder.

UN calls for investigation after dozens killed in Libya airstrike

At least 44 people have been killed after an airstrike on a migrant detention centre in Libya.

The Tajoura centre, located east of the capital Tripoli, was hit at around midnight on Tuesday.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have condemned the attack.

The two groups have called for a "full and independent investigation" to determine how it happened and who was responsible.
