Boris Johnson to push for December election in Commons vote next week

The British prime minister is going to put a motion to MPs next week proposing to hold a general election in December.

Boris Johnson has previously indicated that is what he would do if the European Union grants the UK another Brexit extension.

While that has yet to be confirmed, Mr Johnson announced proposals for a pre-Christmas election this afternoon - saying it would be a condition for granting MPs more time to debate the new Brexit deal.

Fianna Fáil TDs apologise for absentee voting in the Dáil

Four Fianna Fáil TDs have apologised in the Dáil over absentee voting.

A report into the practice earlier did not recommend any sanctions against the TDs involved.

The Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl ordered the investigation after it emerged Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins voted on behalf of his colleague Timmy Dooley while he was not in the Dáil chamber.

A Dublin man who sexually assaulted a woman he met on the dating app Tinder has had his sentence cut in half on appeal.

Paul Flaherty was initially jailed for five years for forcing himself on her at his home in Kiltipper Avenue, Tallaght four years ago.

It happened in August 2015 after a day spent drinking together on their first date.

Police are now searching a third property in County Armagh in connection with the discovery of 39 bodies in a truck container in Essex, England.

Investigators believe all 39 are Chinese nationals.

Police have also confirmed that there were 31 men and eight women among the adult and that they were all adults.

Dublin Airport faces 11% reduction in passenger charges after regulator decision

Dublin Airport faces an average 11% reduction in passenger charges over the next five years after a ruling by regulators.

Currently, the fee that the airport charges airlines for passengers using the airport is capped at €8.81.

However, the Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) has ruled that will be reduced to €7.50 for the next two years - before gradually rising to €8.32 by 2024.
