Coronavirus restrictions to remain in place until May 5th

Restrictions on movement due to the coronavirus crisis are being extended for another three weeks.

The strict restrictions announced two weeks ago were initially meant to last until this coming Sunday, April 12th.

However, the Government this afternoon confirmed the rules will be extended as health officials continue to work to drive down the number of COVID-19 cases here.

Leaving Cert postponed until July or August

The Leaving Cert exams have been postponed until late July or August.

Junior Cycle exams have been cancelled for this year, and will be replaced with school-based exams in the new school year.

State exams typically take place in June - but there had been growing concerns about whether they could take place as normal due to the ongoing school closures caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Coronavirus: 25 more deaths and 480 new cases in Republic

A further 25 coronavirus-related deaths have been confirmed in the Republic.

480 new cases have been confirmed today.

Today's figures bring the overall death toll here to 288, while the number of confirmed cases reported to date now stands at 7,054.

However, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has confirmed that the actual number of cases here is in fact 8,089 - due to the results of some older tests which were sent to German labs now being reported back to health officials here.

A young girl in County Cork has won praise for helping her mother as she delivered her baby sister at home during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Her mother Emma Hartnett, went into labour a fortnight early and gave birth at her home in Ballincollig two weeks ago.

She told The Pat Kenny Show this morning that she initially hoped to hold off on moving to the hospital until her labour was at an advanced stage.

Man using fake blue lights attempts to pull over undercover Gardaí

An investigation is underway after a man using fake blue lights attempted to pull over an undercover garda car in Dublin.

It is understood the man used the lights to direct a car to pull over in the Baldoyle area yesterday – only to find it was carrying plain clothed gardaí.

They searched the man’s car and found “a number of counterfeit items,” including a fake Garda badge.
