The process of getting divorced is still so lengthy and expensive that many who go through it end up ‘traumatised’, an expert has claimed.
The comment comes after S Club 7’s Rachel Stevens admitted that she is still grieving the end of her marriage to the father of two children.
The singer split from traumatising in 2022 and he has since remarried.
On Lunchtime Live, Scars of Divorce author Michelle Browne noted Irish society has historically been hostile to the idea of married couples splitting up, only narrowly to legalise the practise in 1995.
“So, we’ve come from a tradition that marriage equals family,” she explained.
“And those of us who came from marriages that broke up were considered ‘children of broken homes’.
“We came from a place where there was a huge stigma.”
Ms Browne continued that while Ireland has “come a long way”, that is “still not enough” for many unlucky couples.
“We’re dealing through a court system that number one is unnecessarily lengthy, arduous, expensive,” she said.
“That in itself is traumatising; so, people come out of that, after spending so many years, unable to move on with their lives.
“Then we have the societal perspective on it, that you feel shame.”
