A demonstration will be held on Dublin's Moore Street this afternoon - in the hopes of protecting the area.

The Save Moore Street from Demolition group - which is non-party political - says it wants to raise awareness about the importance of both its history of street traders and its connection to the 1916 Rising.

Spokesperson Mel Mac Giobuin explains why they have organised Arms Around Moore Street:

Organisers say the event is intended as "a symbolic human protective chain around Moore Street, to tell property speculators that the Moore Street historic quarter belongs to the Irish people and to the world."

The event starts at 2pm.

Earlier this year families of the leaders of the 1916 Rising backed plans to create a new “historical quarter” in the Dublin city centre area.

The relatives are supporting a proposal from Fianna Fáil - The Moore Street Area Renewal and Development Bill 2015 - which would see the state buy the entire terrace around Number 16, Moore Street.

That building was the final headquarters of the Rising leaders before they surrendered 99 years ago.
