A petition has called for the Oireachtas to introduce a cap on Ireland’s spiralling divorce costs.

On Newstalk Breakfast, family mediator Michelle Browne said it would “not be unusual" for cases to take a decade.

She added that some couples spend up to €100,000 to split up - even before a case reaches the High Court.

“We know that it has a huge negative impact on our children,” she said.

“Not so much the separation, it’s how we’re dealing with it.

“It’s about this protracted court case.”

Ms Browne added that Irish society “needs to change how we deal with divorce”.

“What’s going on in Ireland is just not good enough,” she said.

“The court delays are causing all of these problems.”
