After a year like no other, Budget 2022 will take place on Tuesday, October 12th and it is set to be one of the toughest yet.

Newstalk will be bringing you live coverage on the day, including the speech live at 1pm from Dáil Éireann, followed by expert views and real-time insights, all with thanks to Grant Thornton.

But with Taoiseach Micheál Martin warning that there won’t be “something for everyone in the audience” in Budget 2022, Grant Thornton have created a wishlist of what might be in or out when Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath and Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe take to their feet on Tuesday.

Budget 2022 wishlist

1. Support for remote working

Hybrid working is here to stay and as a result, we would like to see the government increase the support for remote workers in creating home offices such as; flat rate expenses, tax deductions for setting up home offices, retaining the 30% deduction for broadband expenses and increasing the percentage rate allowed to be claimed for utilities.

2. Help to Buy

The Help to Buy incentive has been a key scheme helping younger generations get on the property ladder since it was introduced. Although it is due to end this year, we would like to see this relief extended beyond 31 December 2021 and the threshold of €20,000 be extended permanently to €30,000 to reflect the increase in property prices.

3. VAT credit for going green

We have all witnessed the rising fuel costs and even fuel shortages in recent months. In order to encourage the use of zero emission passenger vehicles and to contribute to the government’s plan to achieve net-zero carbon, we would like to see the government provide a full VAT credit for VAT included on the acquisition or leasing of Battery Electric Vehicles used by businesses.

These are just our top 3 wishes. Check out the rest in the video below and let us know your budget wishes for 2022!
