The school boy was out with friends at around 7 O'clock on Saturday night, at the Orchards Estate near the Compass Hill in Kinsale, when he began to feel ill.

He collapsed on top of a railing, his neck and head becoming wedged between the rounded tops and his airways were blocked. It is understood he suffered serious breathing difficulties while trapped for several minutes.

The boy's friends raised the alarm and the boy's mother, Dearbhail and a neighbour raced to the scene and managed to free him from the railings before the emergency services arrived.

Members of Cork County Fire Brigade worked to resuscitate Leon at the scene, before he was rushed to Cork University Hospital.

Gardai are now preparing a file for an inquest at the Coroner's Court.

Meanwhile, residents have now called on the Town Council to examine the area where the incident occurred, with a view to making it safer.
