Ardal O’Hanlon has said people often come up to him and share their “deep secrets”, including one man who told him about a murder he had committed.
The former Father Ted actor has recently published A Plot To Die For, his second crime thriller.
Reflecting on the writing process on The Claire Byrne Show, Mr O’Hanlon said people are quick to confide in him.
“They tell me stuff that they probably shouldn’t have,” he explained.
“I remember being at a party and some telling me about a murder they committed - in real life.”

Mr O’Hanlon added that at first he “tried to get away from them”, but then decided to carry on the conversation.
“I knew it had happened and you kind of go, ‘Okay, interesting’,” he recalled.
“The guy had served his time, don’t get me wrong.
“We had a very long discussion about motivation and why, the mechanics of it and the fallout, the time in jail.
“That’s just an example, most people aren’t telling me about murders they’ve committed.”
