Every Friday on Moncrieff, the planets align, the bottle opener is located, and wordplay on Twitter hits fever pitch, as the show reviews everything you need to know about heading to the cinema this weekend, or drowning your sorrows in style.
Here's what made the cut on Movies & Booze today...
MOVIES:
Moncrieff's regular movie reviewer Esther McCarthy joined the show from their outside broadcast at the the Galway Arts Festival, 2015, and weighed in on two movies this week.
First up is Inside Out, the newest CGI animation from Pixar, the world’s greatest animation studio, and for a period in the early 2000s, arguably the finest studio on the planet, full stop. The movie takes a very simple idea, and turns it into something utterly heartwarming.
The story sees us take a trip inside the head of Riley, and 11-year-old girl who finds herself coming to terms with the emotions in her head. They include upbeat Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), conservative Fear (Bill Hader), the morose Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black) and the eye-rolling Disgust (Mindy Kaling).
With her angst-riddled adolescence on the horizon, dealing with a move from the Midwest to San Francisco has been a fraught experience for everyone, and her interactions with her parents have seen emotions pushed and pulled in every direction.
Following on from a few duds in the Pixar roster, Esther raved that this was a true return to form for the studio that brought us Up and Finding Nemo.
“In a film packed with brilliantly realised ideas, there are two standout scenes,” she said, “A family argument over the dinner table – where we are introduced to the emotions in Riley’s parents’ heads – could well be the five funniest minutes you’ll experience at a cinema this year.”
“The finale, where we are reminded that you can't experience one emotion without the other, is simply up there with Pixar’s most classic moments,” Esther added.
With Inside Out almost certain to become a Pixar classic, Esther offer an Irish movie and a début feature from the emerging Irish talent Mark Noonan. You're Ugly Too stars Aidan Gillen and, similar to Inside Out, revolves around the emotional turmoil of a young girl whose life is going through upheaval.
Stacey (Lauren Kinsella) is paired with her only living relative, her uncle Will (Gillen) when her mother passes away, and Will gets compassionate early release from prison in order to take charge of her. The two bicker through their new lives in the midlands, where a chance encounter with a Belgian woman promises to bring this new family together.
Esther liked the movie and thought it was a fine example of modern Irish cinema telling intimate stories well.
"Noonan’s unsentimental writing makes this low-key drama even more moving and powerful as you get to know this family and their dilemmas," she said. "Kinsella and Gillen do a fine job as family members thrown together by circumstance."

The self-proclaimed 'Beer Messiah' Dean McGuinness was back with two German lagers he thinks are worth seeking out. The European powerhouse is renowned for its brewing, though we are more likely to think of Pilsners than lagers, but the reality is that a Pils is simply a delightful lager. It is in the different brewing styles that the alchemy of German beer comes for the forefront, and goes down well across the tongue.
Up first was Aktien Landbier Zwickl.
"Zwickl is a term applied to a number of beer styles rather than a specific beer style in itself," Dean said. "When one sees ‘zwickl’ or ‘kellerbier’ on a label, the reference is to a length of time in ageing the beer."
"An incredibly satisfying beer, the depth of flavour envelopes caramel, honey, soft fruit, and develops with noble hop character coming through as oaky woodiness coupled with very mild spice and a hint of tobacco. All of these flavours, while present, and delicately balanced one against the other, and the result is a superbly complex and deliciously interesting beer that is drinkable, full of flavour, and refreshing and satisfying."
The Zwickl was followed up by another Landbier, this time the lighter Helles variety, and it was another hit.
"Bavarian Helles is a classic style – while presenting with a colour similar to a German Pilsner, the style is more balanced, less hop assertive and maltier," Dean said.
"In Aktien Landbier 1857 Helles, the malt character comes through as graham cracker (mild gingernut biscuit) and bread crust with a touch of almond and honey. Noble hops balance the flavour of the beer giving a restrained, mildly spicy woodiness that is sophisticated and understated."
