And here's what Darragh served up to Sean today...
- A homework emergency
Here’s a recording that has gone massively viral again in the last while - a four year old ringing 911 for help with his math homework - and gets it!
Alan has been collecting Irish election material like Dustin and material from referenda and other campaigns since February 1982. He’s scanned them all in and has created a fairly unique Irish historical and political resource. The site has been running since 2009 or thereabouts.
Some of the interesting bits and pieces - the rundown of Irish Celebrity Candidates - people who were well known to the public prior to going for election, including Frank McNamara, the Late Late Show pianist; former RTÉ reporter Mary McAleese and singers like Sonny Knowles, RT Dallas and, of course, Dana.
It also lists those that have become celebrities partly from politics - Jackie Healy Rae, Richard Boyd Barrett, David Norris and Luke Ming Flanagan, and those who entered the media after political careers including Noel Whelan and Ivan Yates.
Alan’s also compiled a huge collection of videos - everything from “Arise and Follow Charlie”, the Fianna Fail 1981 general election song to the Christmas Video messages from the Labour Party. There are election posters, leaflets, newsletters and much much more to be read.
Truly a labour of passion and of love.
- The EmojiTracker - track the use of emoji on Twitter in real time
Those tiny images have been popping up in text messages and tweets for a while now, and hit it big when they hit Apple's iOS in 2011. There are approximately 845 of them but they’re being added to regularly.
From the Japanese for pictograph - Picture (e) and characters (moji) - they’re now being used frequently to replace text, from “I’m smiling” to “I’m crying with laughter” to love hearts to winky faces.
The emojitracker is a website that shows just how much they’re being used on twitter. The answer is - lots.
The most popular emoji at time of research was the crying with laughter one with 739,312,035 uses - officially called Face With Tears of Joy. Then the flashing love heart - called Black Heart Suit - the Heavy Black Heart, the smiling face with heart-shaped eyes, the unamused face, and the loudly crying face.
As you can imagine the ones that aren’t used a lot are things like the mountain cableway car, the sign for customs and the sign for no bicycles. You can click on each emoji and see what public tweets they’re being used in, live.
Eat This Much automatically creates meal plans that meet your diet goals. It can be personalised for your food preferences, budget, and schedule. Then, once a week, they give you a grocery list with everything you need.
“The best nutrition strategy is the one that actually happens, because behaviors, not ideas, are the secret to changing your diet."
You can customise popular eating styles like vegan and paleo to match your needs and preferences. For $9 a month you unlock a meal tracker and calendar which allows you to plan your meals in advance. As you follow the plans, they track what you did or didn't eat, and if you deviate from the plans, they make it easy to readjust your targets for the next week to stay on track.
A deceptively simple website, this is a huge database of careers that people might like to consider as a job. However, more than a Wikipedia page, it tells you the:
- Knowledge you might need - what you might need to study to get there
- The Skills you should have to consider doing the job
- The Abilities - Memory, Verbal, Ideas and Logic you should have
- What sort of Personality you should have
- What Technology you might have to use
- What Education you would need (plus links to find the education)
- And most importantly, what your Job Outlook would be with a role like this.
For example a radio presenter would need Communications Skills, to be a good problem solver, would need to understand music or sound editing software, may need a bachelor's degree or high school diploma and the job outlook is $29,790 per year on average - below average for the rest of the US. Where as a producer is looking at a salary of $69,100...
