Where is best place to find evidence of dinosaurs in Ireland?

It wasn’t until the 1980s that it was confirmed that Ireland used to have a dinosaur population.

Om Moncrieff, Palaeontology Professor Maria McNamara of UCC explained that for the most part Ireland has “the wrong sort of rocks if you’re looking for dinosaurs”.

“Most of the rocks in Ireland pre-date the dinosaur era,” she said.

“There’s only a thin, little sliver of mesozoic rocks - that are rocks from the dinosaur era - preserved on the coastlines around Northern Ireland, especially County Antrim.

“So, we just have a very small area of the country that preserves those sorts of rocks.

“In those rocks, we do have dinosaurs and lots of other creatures that lived alongside the dinosaurs.”

The fossils were originally noticed by a retired teacher walking along the beach.

Professor McNamara added that it is only a “matter of time before we find more”.
