William Hanson’s list of ‘What Makes A Gentleman’ left Luke Thomas “scratching his head”, the 98 FM presenter admitted.
The etiquette expert has written in Country Life a list of the 39 attributes that make a man a “true gentleman”.
The list suggests a gentleman, “Writes prompt and pithy thank-you letters” and, “Listens more than he speaks.”
Mr Hanson also suggests that a true gentleman, “Speaks to an assistant the same way he would a Duke” and, “Would never go to watch a football match dressed in the team shirt”.
As well, he urged men to be “pathologically punctual” and never to drive a Tesla.
On Lunchtime Live, Luke Thomas said he thought that being a ‘gentleman’ is something that happens to you as you age.
“I wasn’t called a gentleman till I was at least 30,” he said.
“But as a young man, absolutely not.”
There was, however, one thing he considered essential.
“It’s when people remember your name,” he said.
“It’s just a simple thing but it’s very thoughtful, it’s gentleman-like.
“As a man doing that is a big one for me.”
'Really endearing'
Also on the programme, broadcaster Meghan Scully said she always loves it when men “treat me like a lady”.
“Do you know what I love is when they open the car door for me,” she said.
“For me, that’s a real gentleman trait.
“I know that’s really old school but I just find that really endearing."
