Singer Daniel O'Donnell has warned fans not to donate to an online scam seeking money to help fight the outbreak of COVID-19.

The hoax involves a fake Instagram account set up impersonating the Donegal entertainer and asking fans to donate money.

The account has been reported to the Gardaí, and anyone who has already donated is urged to contact them immediately.

In a post on Mr O'Donnell's Facebook page, a spokesperson said that he was asking people to spread the word about the fake account.

The statement said that he does not communicate directly with fans on any social media channels, including Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram

Mr O'Donnell said: “This is horrendous to see at this difficult time for everyone.

"I am absolutely appalled that criminals would take advantage of the good people of Ireland and my international fans to set up this fake account to make money.

"I urge my fans to spread the news that this is a fake account and under no circumstance should they donate to these fraudsters.
