Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed the idea of introducing a dislike button on the site during a live streamed Q&A session yesterday. He said that the company is open to the idea - but that it would have to be done the right way.

Zuckerberg ruled out a Reddit style system where users could like or dislike posts. He says that the company would not bring in a dislike button that would let people say 'I don't like what you are saying or posting'.

He added: "The Like button is really valuable because it’s a way for you to very quickly express a positive emotion or sentiment when someone puts themselves out there or share something. Some people have asked for a dislike button because they want to say ‘that thing isn’t good’. And that's not something that we think is good for the world so we’re not going to build that."

What the company is open to is a dislike button to show empathy. For example if someone posts, "My car just broke down on my way to the airport to catch a flight :(" - it feels counter-intuitive to click like. A dislike button would offer a fast way to show empathy with that person.

What else did Mr Zuckerberg say?

  • The CEO also defended Facebook's policy of not allowing users change their names - saying that users are allotted only one username. So if you are Joe Bloggs, you get facebook.com/JoeBloggs - you cannot change that once an account is setup.
  • He also said that the company try to stop users registering with false names as it reduces accountability and could facilitate wrong doing on the site.
  • Mark Zuckerberg takes New Years resolutions very seriously - but hasn't decided what his will be for 2015 yet.
  • He advised people starting companies not to worry too much about making mistakes in the early stages.
  • When asked about habits that have added to his success he highlighted the importance of spending your time proactively, rather than reactively throughout the day i.e Decide what you want to get done - and do it. Don't get caught up with responding to new emails or dealing with distracting issues that come up throughout the day.
  • Everyone should learn how to code. Even if you don't use coding, it gives you skills that will be valuable in what ever you do.
  • He thinks we worry too much about children using new technologies - but if he had kids he would keep them off of Facebook until they are 13.
