New figures from the European Audiovisual Observatory show that cinemas across the EU took in €6.32bn during 2014 - this was an increase of 0.6 percent on the previous year.

Irish cinemas were less busy - takings dropped from €102.8m to €100.4m.

Two films proved to be particularly popular - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies had 22.7 million admissions, while The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 was the second most popular film with 20.1 million admissions.

Both films are based on books, and have been accused of milking their source material by splitting individual books into multiple films.

It is worth noting that these blockbusters failed to hit the heights of previous years' offerings, like Skyfall's 42.7 million admissions in 2012 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2's 38 million.

How to Train Your Dragon 2, Wolf of Wall Street, and the French language film Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu? make up the rest of the top 5.

The French offering was considered too racist to be shown in most regions. The plot focuses around white Catholic parents who's four daughters marry men from different racial and religious backgrounds.

The estimated market share for European films in the EU on the other hand leapt from 26.2 percent to 33.4 percent. This is the highest level since the Observatory started to calculate European films' market share in 1996.

EU production levels have been steadily increasing over the past decades. This trend continued in 2014, as the estimated number of European feature film productions increased from 1,587 to 1,603 films. This represents yet another record high and breaks down into an estimated 1,118 feature fiction films and 485 were feature documentaries.
