Ireland’s second largest mobile operator, Three has announced it's offering free 4G access to its customers, for life. The company has also started to rollout 4G Plus, providing speeds of up to 225 Mbps.
The network reported a 77% increase in data traffic in 2015 and an additional 19% increase so far in 2016. It would appear that video content is one of the key contributors to the growing usage. Almost half of Three’s data traffic is now generated by video streaming, while just 16% of the traffic is made up by browsing.
Commenting on the announcement, Elaine Carey, Chief Commercial Officer at Three said: “Three is Ireland’s leading mobile data network, carrying more data than any other operator. We are now responding further to customers’ data appetite by offering free 4G for life on all plans so they can do even more with their smartphone with faster uploading and downloading speeds.
“The availability of 4G Plus means that customers will now be able to experience the fastest speeds available on mobile with peak speeds of 225 Mbps. 4G Plus will be available to all customers with compatible handsets no matter what plan they are on.”
Three is currently investing €300 million in its network. It is hoped that this work will be complete by 2017. This will lead to 145% increase in 4G sites across the country.
Following the initial roll out, by the end of April 2016, Three will have 56% population coverage for 4G Plus across the below areas. With Three’s €300m investment in its 4G network, 4G Plus will soon be available across all 26 counties.
