The trend is flat for Ireland's biggest social networks, with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn's user numbers appearing to have peaked in May 2014 - the amount of people using each site is down by 2 percent since then.

When it comes to social networking in Ireland, Facebook is still king. This quarter's Ipsos MRBI social media survey finds that 60 percent of Irish people have a Facebook account, and 72 percent of users check the site every day. Twitter is the second biggest social network, with less than half of Facebook's user-base - 28 percent of Irish people have accounts.

These Irish figures follow the global trend towards less Tweeting. Twitter stocks fell by 11 percent when the site reported falling user-engagement figures late in October. The amount of Irish users checking the site everyday has fallen by 7 percent since August 2013 - 37 percent of Irish users currently check Twitter everyday.

Instagram bucks the trend, with user levels on the rise. 18 percent of Irish users have the photo sharing app. Instagram is second only to Facebook when it comes to user-engagement figures - 46 percent of those who frequently use different social media apps check it at least once a day. This is up from 41 percent the last time this survey was published in September. Facebook acquired the app for approximately $1bn in April of 2012.

LinkedIn is the third most popular social network, used by 24 percent of Irish people. This is up from 18 percent in November 2012. But of the top sites it has the lowest engagement figures - only 15 percent say that they check the professional networking site everyday.

Elsewhere, usage of the social-dating app Tinder is down by 1 percent to 5 percent. Pinterest is used by 10 percent of respondents, and Google+ is Ireland's fourth biggest network, the study revealing that 21 percent of Irish people have accounts with the site.
