A protest song against Theresa May’s Tory government that accuses the British Prime Minister of being a “liar” has climbed to number three in the iTunes charts and is at number seven on the Official Singles Chart midweek update.

Performed and produced by Captain Ska, Liar Liar GE2017 tears into Mrs May’s time as the leader of the Conservative Party, addressing pivotal election issues like the NHS, education, child poverty, as well as several high-profile U-turns including her decision to call a snap election.

With a chorus filled with lines like “She’s a liar, liar, you can’t trust her, no no no no,” the song has now overtaken hits by such artists as Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran and Ireland’s Niall Horan as it climbs the charts.

The song has been available for digital download since the end of last week, but despite its popularity, major radio stations across the United Kingdom are refusing to play it on the airwaves.

Profits from downloads of Captain Ska’s song will be split between food banks and the People’s Assemby Against Austerity.

Despite Liar Liar GE2017 making its way into the charts, The Big Top 40 Show on Capital FM and Heart made the decision to skip the song when playing the hits of the week. The production teams’ decision received the backing of the British broadcasting regulator Ofcom, which said radio and television programming must show impartiality during the election campaign.

Captain Ska were formed by trumpeter Jake Painter in 2010, who wanted to address the lack of a “big enough musical response to the coalition government and its austerity-driven policies.”

Songs released by the reggae band include: What’s the Point of Nick Clegg?, War Crime, Shame on You, and US Healthcare Explained.

An earlier version of Liar Liar, released in 2010, made it to number one on the reggae singles charts.
