More than 20 years after its debut at the Eurovision song contest in Dublin in 1994, Riverdance continues to clock-up millions in annual revenues for its principal shareholders, John McColgan and Moya Doherty. 

According to new figures published by the entertainment industry journal, Pollstar, Riverdance achieved ticket sales of just over $20m in 2016, generated by 207 performances in 45 cities around the world.

It sold almost 350,000 tickets - grossing an average of $458,199 (€436,276) in each city.

7,715 tickets were sold per performance - at an average price of $59.39 (€56.52).

Riverdance will return to Dublin's Gaiety Theater between June 23rd and September 2nd of this year.

The show will also tour to China, the US, Canada, and a number of European countries.

Pollstar's data found that Bruce Springsteen was the world's highest grossing live act in 2016 - making more than $268m through ticket sales. This included two sold-out shows at Dublin's Croke Park.

His performances earned an average of $4m per show.

The tour continues in the coming weeks with a string of 13 performances in Australia and New Zealand.

Coldplay, Guns N’ Roses, and Justin Bieber have already confirmed that they will perform in Ireland during 2017.
