The family of the American wife and father-in-law of Irish man Jason Corbett say they will plead not guilty to charges relating to his murder.

Molly Martens (31) and her father Thomas Martens (65), have each been charged with second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

Last night a grand jury in Davidson, North Carolina gave the go-ahead for the trial.

Limerick man Jason Corbett died at the age of 39, after an alleged dispute at his home in North Carolina last August.

Mr Corbett's American wife had attempted to win custody of his two children, but the courts placed them with his Irish family instead. They travelled here earlier in the year.

Darrick Ignasiak is a reporter for the Dispatch newspaper in North Carolina.

He told Newstalk Breakfast it could be some time yet before the trial gets started.

"It is very early on, with indictments coming down today. In these matters, when I have covered them in previous years, it could be over a year before it went to trial, or even resulted in a plea negotiation".

Mike Earnest is Tom Marten's brother-in-law, and uncle of Molly Marterns, living in Carolina.

He reads a prepared statement from the Martens family.

Catherine Fegan is chief correspondent at the Irish Daily Mail, who has been following the case to date.

She spoke to Newstalk Breakfast about the background and these latest developments.
