Gardaí are continuing to question a 29-year-old man in connection with the murder of a father of three in Dublin.

Dermot Byrne (56) was found injured and naked on North Street in Swords in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was attended to by medical personnel, but was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí have said Mr Byrne did not have a criminal background – and officers have yet to uncover a motive for the attack.

Conor Feehan, journalist with Independent News and Media (INM) told Newstalk Breakfast that gardaí are faced with a number of questions – including the exact location of the assault:

“It is possible that he was attacked on one part of the street and then brought further down the street where he was dumped,” he said.

“But gardaí have also got to consider the possibility that he was attacked elsewhere.”

Gardaí yesterday arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the investigation and he is being detained at Swords Garda Station.

Mr Feehan said gardaí are considering why Mr Byrne’s clothes may have been removed from the scene:

“What has perplexed gardaí to some degree is the fact that Mr Byrne was naked when he was found,” he said.

“They are trying to work out why the man who attacked him may have stripped him.

“It could have been to remove evidence of DNA.”

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area between 1.30am and 3am to come forward - in particular any drivers who may have dash cam footage.
