Cork City Council has granted planning permission for a proposed six-storey office block to be constructed at Albert Quay in the city's docklands.

Construction on what will be the Cork's largest ever development will begin this year and is set to be completed by autumn 2018.

An appeal to An Bord Pleanála could delay this but Minster for Housing Simon Coveney has said he is optimistic there will be no such opposition.

Owen O'Callaghan's property company is behind the €90 million development, which will involve the creation of four different buildings on the 2.25 acre site.

The construction process should create 350 jobs, with the finished product, designed by architects Henry J Lyons, capable of hosting approximately 3,000 people.

Permission for a proposed events centre at Albert Quay was previously rejected, meaning the centre will now be built on the site of the former Beamish and Crawford brewery on South Main Street.

O'Callaghan said:

"This is a very significant project that makes Cork city much more attractive for foreign direct and indigenous investment projects. The location is at the centre of public transport options and just a few minutes walk from the city centre.

"That will certainly appeal to the young employee demographic characteristic of enterprises in the new economy."
