Brendan Howlin: Government will look to 'relieve the torture' suffered by transgender people

The Public Expenditure Minister says the Government will look to 'relieve' the 'torture' suffered by transgender people when it discusses the Gender Recognition Bill today.

The draft legislation has been working its way through both Houses of the Oireachtas.

If enacted, it would allow passports and other civil registration documents to recognise a person's new gender - in the case where someone has chosen to change it.

It comes amid widespread international coverage of Caitlyn Jenner - formerly American athlete Bruce Jenner - in recent days.

Vanity Fair magazine released details of their cover featuring Caitlyn on Monday.

The cover shot, taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, features Jenner in a strapless corset, legs crossed, sitting on a stool at her home in Malibu, California.

Yesterday, an Irish transgender woman told the Pat Kenny Show that Caitlyn Jenner's story will give great encouragement to other people in her situation

Speaking earlier today Minister Brendan Howlin said a 'fair minded' Irish Government and public will be looking to help the transgender community:
