The controversial proposed expansion of Apple's European headquarters in Cork has been granted permission, with some stipulations to appease local residents.

The parking spaces at the site have been curbed at 300 over the next five years, where the US tech company initially planned for 750 to complement the four-storey construction.

Also included in the 12 conditions, a minimum of 200 high-quality, covered cycling spaces will also be required to reduce traffic volumes.

Apple is required to submit proposals as to how it will achieve these targets.

The expansion of the Hollyhill premises was fiercely opposed by many local residents, with 30 people from the Ardcullen estate signing a petition to prevent it going ahead.

The petition stated:

"When we were housed on this estate, we were facing a green space for over 20 years.

"Now we open our curtains and front doors to an office block. The last extension, which is still not completed, took its toll on us and our families and had health impacts for some of the residents".

Local Sinn Féin councillor Mick Nugent welcomed the stipulations:

"I acknowledge that permission has been granted and I would hope that Apple will keep engaging with the local community, especially the residents in Ardcullen who live right on the edge of the site.

A lot of these people had to put up with noise pollution and works in the past and I would hope that Apple will ensure that proper structures are put in place for the coming developments".

An appeal against yesterday's decision can be made to An Bord Pleanála within the next four weeks.
