A priest in Cavan says he doesn't fear for his own safety after his scathing homily against those who attacked Kevin Lunney, adding that he hopes more people also speak out.

Fr Oliver O'Reilly described the torture of the Quinn Industrial Holdings executive as "a modern form of crucifixion."

Tomorrow marks two weeks since Mr Lunney was abducted, brutally assaulted and dumped on the side of the road.

There's been widespread condemnation of the attack, which left the 50-year-old with what police have described as life-changing injuries.

It follows a series of recent assaults and threats targeting Quinn staff.

During his homily yesterday, the parish priest of Ballyconnell in Cavan - Fr Oliver O'Reilly - described the attacks as a "modern form of crucifixion deployed by terrorist groups such as Islamic State".

Fr O'Reilly branded those responsible as a "Mafia style group with its own Godfather".

This morning, he said he doesn't mind losing parishioners by speaking the truth.

Speaking on the Pat Kenny Show, Fr O'Reilly said: "I'm glad I done it.

"[One man] said to me last night... 'there'll be a few people who won't be back in your church again'... but so be it."

The priest spoke to Kevin Lunney last night, who thanked Fr O'Reilly for what he said yesterday.

Fr O'Reilly added: "He's still in poor health, but he knows what's going on, and he's interested.

"Kevin Lunney is a very lucky man to be alive."

He said the attackers are "playing games with people's lives", and "crazy criminals who are liable to do anything".

According to The Irish Times, Fr O'Reilly was told to ‘watch yourself’ after condemning the recent attack.

However, the priest today suggested: "I would hope that more people would get a bit of courage and speak out."

He said he's 'gone past' feeling threatened.

He suggested: "I've had a good life. If people want to threaten me, fine... It doesn't cost me. I had a good night's sleep last night."

Fr O'Reilly said it's the Quinn executives and directors who have families depending on them, and that the intimidation of them needs to stop.

He also called for the gardaí and PSNI to be 'more active and assertive' in border regions, and for Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan to offer more resources to the area.
