On tonight's Off The Ball, Ger was joined on the line by Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport.

Following on from our special report on the Sports Capital Programme on OTB AM this morning, Ger sought answers and clarifications from the TD for the Kerry constituency in regards to the future of the Sports Capital Programme in a week when the programme has faced scrutiny over the allocation of grants.

Griffin confirmed that the publication of a sports policy document is on the agenda in the short term.

"There needs to be a good framework absolutely," he said.

"I'm looking to do it in a matter of weeks and looking to get it out there very, very shortly."

He also added that: "I would say as well that actually in Dublin - and this is an interesting point - there actually weren't enough applications from Dublin to absorb the per capita allocation to Dublin".

Griffin also explained that certain issues have been and are under review.

"There already is good emphasis on tackling disadvantaged areas: 1,000 of the 1,700 successful applicants are deemed disadvantaged actually. So that's actually already in the scheme but I think we can adjust it further and give even more weight to levels of disadvantage and also helps those applicants as well in terms of the matching funding that's required," he said, before continuing.

"These are things that are being reviewed at the moment. They were being reviewed prior to this thing blowing up a couple of weeks ago and I think that's a good thing and we're always trying to improve it.

"It's very hard to get anything perfect but certainly as Minister of State for the department, I want to make sure we have the best possible system in place on my watch."
