After a 3-0 win over Fulham at the weekend, former Chelsea and Everton footballer Pat Nevin was steadfast in that Arsenal were the headline act for discussion.
“There’s only this story- It’s Arsenal and they’re not falling, it looks as if they’ve had their blip” he says.
Not only did the former Scottish international think they were “unstoppable” and “brilliant to watch”, he also believes that their own self belief is contributing to their high flying nature at the minute.
“The confidence was brilliant but they absolutely know each other and know that they’re a team (a) capable of winning, but also of keeping on winning” Nevin says.
The luxury of a lead such as that is something in his playing days he says he “would have done everything for” as he explains, with “that foot off the gas and everything is easy.”
“See when you watched that Manchester United vs Liverpool game the other week there, did Liverpool look tired when they walked off? No! They cruised off and Man United sludged off because they were physically and mentally wrecked and that’s what happened” he says.
“That’s what made me look at that little period that Arsenal had and I asked myself were they able to sustain it and keep on going when they needed to push everything, stretch everything and take every single chance at the end of every single game and they just about did and they got through it.
“Honestly the game against Fulham shouldn’t have been a walk in the park but they’d have walked off after the end of that game and went, ‘yeah that’s cool, that was like a training session’ and you can’t imagine how much that’s worth it’s fantastic.”
Depth is also an area which may pay of for Mikel Arteta’s men according to Nevin.
“If you look at their bench they’ve got a striker ready which kind of helps as well so getting an extra player who you know is great, knows your system and is your main goal scorer while you’re flying it anyway and he’s ready to walk back in. If he walks back in with the right attitude which I have a strong suspicion he will, it will be an absolute joy for them” he continues.
“They’re in an amazing position at the moment.
“I can’t see any problems at the back or one player where you’re thinking ‘well if he gets injured oh my god what are they going to do’, I can’t see that. They’ve got enough all the way through the team that if someone gets injured or if someone gets suspended for a game or two it doesn’t matter, they’ve got plenty of good cover.”
