A man has been injured in a shooting in west Dublin.

It happened at a busy Lidl supermarket on Blakestown Road in Blanchardstown at about twenty past five this evening.

The victim - a man in his 40s - was treated at the scene and taken to hospital, where his injuries are described as 'serious but not life-threatening'.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses.

Local's reported a large Garda presence in the area, including the Garda helicopter.

Sinn Fein Councillor for Dublin West, Paul Donnelly, says it's unfortunately becoming an all-too familiar occurrence: "I was actually in the house when we heard the helicopter and one of the comments in the house was 'that sounds like there might be another shooting in the area' and not too long later we heard that someone HAD been shot.  I hope the person recovers, and those responsible are caught, but sadly it's becoming the norm in Dublin 15".

A car has also been found burned out nearby and Gardai are investigating whether the two incidents may be connected.

No arrests have been made as yet, and investigations are ongoing.
