Up to 100 tonnes of rubbish have been found at an illegal dump in Wicklow.

Tyres, window and doorframes are among the items dumped across parts of the Charlesland area of Greystones.

Wicklow County Council officers are working their way through the items in the hopes of finding out who is responsible.

Local councillor Nicola Lawless says the scale of the discovery is massive.

"As we walked the route, the further we walked the more we found," she told Chris Donoghue. "[There] was rubbish literally all over the place.

"It's very overgrown - you wouldn't see it from the road."

She explained that Wicklow County Council was 'very quick' to act in response to the situation.

"They have served a notice, under the Waste Management Act, to the landowner that it is his responsibility to clean it up."

She added that if the owner does not clean up the site, "the worst case scenario is that Wicklow County Council will probably have to come in and they'll have to bear the brunt of the actual bill of cleaning it up - because it is on such a large scale it cannot be left for so long."
