The Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has praised the work of emergency services after he was attacked by a cow.

Deputy Healy-Rae says he is lucky to be alive after his son and a neighbour came to his rescue during the incident on Sunday evening.

The Independent TD says the cow was after calving, and backed him into a corner and knocked him to the ground.

Speaking to Pat Kenny, Deputy Healy-Rae described the extent of his injuries, saying he has been "through the wars but I'm alright".

"I have broken ribs and things," he explained. "The amazing thing about is, she stood on my face but whatever type of head I have must be fairly strong. My nose isn't broken and I don't have many broken bones. I just have a lot of bruising and the back of my head was cut.

"I'm just extremely lucky, and I'm very grateful to the gardaí, the hospital management and the nurses and everybody who were so good," the Kerry TD added.

He also criticised some of the online responses to the incident.

"It's absolutely frightening what people write online when something like this happens," he said. "I'm so grateful to all of the people who were so nice and kind and sending me good wishes... but if you go online and look at it yourself... The mentality of some people has gotten very bad".
