Yesterday, we featured a story about a Romanian family with three children who were left homeless and living on the street. It's not an isolated case.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive have released figures that indicate the number of homeless families doubled in the last year.

Amy, who has been living in emergency accommodation with her children since April, joined Pat Kenny in studio this morning.

Amy had been living in rented accommodation for over 4 years but was asked to leave by her landlord who was forced to sell the house.

However, she has no issue with her landlord: "We were on really good terms. He was sorry to let me go.

"There was no grievance on that part."

Amy had four months notice to leave the house. In the meantime, she got on to the council who told her they couldn't do anything for her until she had actually left the house.

"We were told to come in on the day with your suitcases and your belongings and then they will sort out accommodation. I went on and looked for rented accommodation. There was no accommodation that was accepting rent allowance."

Amy had been on the list for local authority accommodation for over six years but said that she wasn't a priority: "I did think I would be more of a priority because I have handed them a number of doctor letters regarding my son.

"They have been told that in certain situations when Noah gets overwhelmed that he is a high risk to children and adults. They still haven't done anything for him.

"I understand that there is a lot of people in the same situation as myself... but I need to fight for my family."

Amy detailed what happened after she left rented accommodation: "I was sleeping on the landing in my mam's house and from then I slept in a car and from the car I went to sleep in a hostel in town on my own."

Amy's children were in the care of either her mother or her daughter's father during the time she was away.

She was then moved to a hotel with her children: "You're not allowed anything in the hotel room. You're depending on going to people's houses or eating out.

"It's not your home. You're putting two children in a room trying to get children to sleep and it's not possible."

Speaking about where she will go from here, she said: "They said that there's nothing for me because they're still housing people from last year.

"I've sat back and let them do their job.

"I think now though, it's coming to a point where I'm at breaking point.

"I need for them to realise that there are people out there who have a lot on their plate and they do need housing."
