While World Cup qualifying in Asia was taken care of last month, Africa, South, central and North America are still on-going...

Argentina and Colombia have both booked their place in Brazil. Now all that remains is to decide which team will be forced into the playoffs.

For now it seems as if fifth-placed Uruguay will be consigned to a match against Asia's fifth team Jordan. Uruguay are three points down on Ecuador (3rd) and Chile (4th). Those two play each other and a draw would mean both qualify automatically, leaving Uruguay in fifth even if they beat Argentina.

Uruguay's relatively poor goal difference means that a win against Argentina in Montevideo would still leave them fifth even if one of Ecuador or Chile were to lose. At the moment there is a four goal swing for Uruguay to turn around.

But either way, Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and co will fancy their chances of getting past Jordan in the playoffs.

CAF

There is nothing too complicated about this stage of African qualifying. 10 teams participate in two-legged knockout ties with the winner qualifying automatically.

The weekend's first legs saw Ivory Coast take the initiative against Senegal, taking a 3 - 1 scoreline back to Dakar.

Nigeria struggled to a 2 - 1 away win in Ethiopia, while Burkina Faso hold a narrow 3 - 2 lead over Algeria after a topsy-turvy first leg in Ouagadougou.

Cameroon secured a goalless draw in Tunisia to leave their tie tightly poised ahead of the return in Yaounde.

Tonight, two African heavyweights Ghana and Egypt do battle in the first leg of their tie. The game takes place in Ghana.

The second legs of these ties take place next month.

CONCACAF

Mexico have saved some face after recent troubles but they needed a nerve-jangling 2 - 1 win over Panama to jump into the fourth-placed playoff spot.

El Tri need a win away to Costa Rica to have any chance of automatic qualification as Honduras sit three points above with a game to go, with the added bonus of a two-goal advantage when it comes to goal difference.

However, Mexico could still miss out on a play-off place if they lose to Costa Rica and Panama beat USA at home by a respectable scoreline.

Honduras can reach their second consecutive World Cup automatically if they get at least draw in Jamaica, regardless of Mexico's result.
