Iceland denied Lionel Messi and Argentina a win in their opening group game as the minnows secured a memorable 1-1 draw at their first ever World Cup.

Sergio Aguero had given the Argentineans the lead before Alfred Finnbogason equalised for Iceland.

Messi saw his penalty effort saved by Hannes Halldorsson in the second half as the Barcelona icon failed to get his name on the score sheet.

In Group C, France edged past Australia in a 2-1 victory which saw them benefit from the first VAR penalty decision in World Cup history.

Denmark also began their campaign with a win after beating Peru 1-0 thanks to Yussuf Poulsen’s second half strike.

Croatia sit top of Group D, above Argentina and Iceland, after beating Nigeria 2-0 thanks to goals from Andrej Kramaric and Luka Modric.
